Species shown: Northern Gannet

Northern gannets are the largest seabirds in the North Atlantic, having a wingspan of up to two metres (6+¹⁄₂ feet). Northern gannets occur in northern Europe and Canada. Their most important nesting ground is the United Kingdom, with about two-thirds of the world’s population. Gannets spend most of the year at sea, they are on land only in the breeding season. They are colonial breeders on islands and coasts, where they build their nests on coastal cliffs. The photo shows the most characteristic part of the courtship behavior of gannets. They are completely at ease in the vicinity of people and great fun to watch.
