Species shown – Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea) and Western Ribbon Snake (Thamnophis proximus)

Like most members of the heron family, little blue herons are opportunistic predators.  They feed on a variety of prey items, including snakes.  In this photo, the little blue heron is tackling a very squirmy western ribbon snake in a salt marsh along the Texas coast.  The heron did eventually subdue the snake and consumed it!

Taken at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge along the southern coast of Texas.  Shot with a Canon EOS R7 with a Canon 100mm-500mm lens, f/7.1, 1/2500s, ISO800.
