Species shown – Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria citrea)

Prothonotary warblers are common breeding birds in the swamps of the southeast United States.  Small numbers do make it all the way up to Wisconsin during the breeding season.  They are the only eastern warbler to nest in tree cavities.  The bird is named for its plumage which resembles the robes worn by papal clerks known as “prothonotaries”.

Taken in Northfield, IL on the breeding grounds.  Shot with a Canon EOS R7 with a Canon 400mm plus a 1.4 extender, f/4.0, 1/4000s, ISO800.
