Spotted Woodpecker and Eurasian Jay

March

Species shown: Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) & Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius)

The great spotted woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker that occurs throughout Eurasia and North Africa. Especially juvenile birds have a tendency to easily start a fight, usually with other juvenile great spotted woodpeckers, and sometimes with adult great spotted woodpeckers or other species. On this photo, a juvenile great spotted woodpecker challenges a Eurasian Jay, but the jay is clearly dominant over the woodpecker.

This photo was taken in the Netherlands in September, with Canon EOS R5 with Canon 500mm f/4, 1/1600s, ISO6400.
