Great Crested Grebes are famous for their elaborate, highly ritualized courtship dances. These synchronized displays strengthen pair bonds and involve complex behaviors such as head-shaking, “ghostly penguin” displays where they stand upright on the water, and the iconic “weed dance”. The behavior shown is one of the head shaking behaviors that great crested grebes show during their mating period, usually in the months of march and April.
